Abby is our full-time counselor. She has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Middle
Tennessee State University and spent several years working for different nonprofit
organizations and ministries before coming to The Joy House. Abby has always felt a strong call
to ministry, specifically in caring for others and making them feel safe and loved no matter their
She spent nearly 8 years working with the ministry of YoungLife on both a professional and
volunteer basis. In 2014 her work with YoungLife brought her to Jasper where she was first
introduced to The Joy House. She has since felt a connection to what the Lord is doing in the
lives of families and teens through the Joy House ministry. In 2017 God opened an unexpected
door for Abby to join the Joy House ministry team to provide administrative assistance and a
welcoming presence in the counseling center.
Soon after Abby began assisting in the Counseling Center our counselors Garry Barber and Bill
Wattenbarger began to see that her gifts were beyond scheduling and welcoming others into
our counseling center, she has the gift of counseling. In 2018 with the guidance and tutelage of
Garry and Bill, Abby began counseling part time in addition to her administrative duties and has
now transitioned into a full time counseling role. Her sincerest prayer is that she would
continue the Legacy of grace filled, Christ centered counseling that Garry Barber taught her.
When Abby is not counseling you can find her visiting her family in Tennessee, hiking in the
mountains or enjoying a night of games and laughter with her friends.
